Children's Privacy
Children are an integral part of the online community. As parents, you should get to know your
children's favorite online areas, just as you know the stations they watch on television. In the
end, however, there is no better safeguard than parental supervision.
DIYonline.com does not knowingly collect information from children under the age
of 18. If we learn that a user is under the age of 18, we will remove their membership information
from our database records.
The information we collect and how we use the
information
To provide you the best products and services, we team with business partners.
DIYonline.com may contract with outside companies to administer our mailing lists or provide retail
services. Your personal information may be shared with an outside company for the sole purpose of
administering the products, services and programs you have selected. When you indicate that you
want to receive a product or service, or contact a person or organization, we share the data needed
for you to receive what you have indicated. Occasionally, we hire consultants that may need access
to our member database to perform their services for us.
DIYonline.com collects two types of information about our guests: (1)
aggregated (collective) data that tracks visitors as a group, and (2)
individual user data that is volunteered.
DIYonline.com gathers data to monitor visitor activity on the web site as a
whole. Aggregated tracking allows us to monitor traffic on the site to determine which areas of
DIYonline.com are most attractive to our visitors. This type of information helps us make
improvements and add new features and services based on visitor interests. We may disclose this
aggregated information to pre-screened third parties such as our sponsors, advertisers and
partners.
DIYonline.com requests personal information, or individual
user data, when you voluntarily sign up for our member
registration, contests, sweepstakes, and promotional programs, for example, so that you may receive
better online content and because it is the best way for us to know our web site users. Personal
information enables us to process your custom Specification Kits, and provide/disclose regional
pricing for your DIY projects, based on your zip code. This information enables us to enhance your
unique site visits and follow up with you after you visit our site or use our proprietary Design
Tools, including the Designer Series Software and Calculators.
The types of personal information collected within our web site include but are
not limited to:
- Name
- Address
- Email address
- Password
- Password Hint
- Optional demographic information such as zip code and gender
- Your home and project specifications
- Information about your hobbies, design preferences, home improvement skills, needs and specific
plans/specifications you require for your project
- Project history
- Contest, specials, and sweepstake entries
- Entry and exit points from our web site
- Your navigation path within our web site
- Your Internet browser and operating system
- IP address used to access our service, including dates and time of access
- Technical support/customer service history
Again, we use this information so that we can customize and enhance the content
and/or layout of our site for each individual user; to notify users (with permission) of updates to
our site or promotional offers and/or opportunities that we believe will be of interest; and to
investigate violations of our
User Agreement, if
needed.
Per the user's request, we will process orders and contractor referral requests,
and in these cases we must share specific personal information related to the transaction.
Though we make every effort to preserve user privacy, we may need to
disclose personal information when required by law wherein we have a good-faith belief
that such action is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order
or legal process served on our Web site.
How We Collect Information
Like most other web sites, DIYonline.com's servers automatically track certain information about
your activity on DIYonline.com. This information includes:
- The browser you are using.
- Your Internet Protocol (IP) address. An IP address is a number automatically assigned to your
computer whenever you surf the Web. The computers that deliver the Web pages to you automatically
identify your computer by its IP address. When you request a page from our site, our servers log
your IP address, for the purpose of system administration and to provide aggregated data to
advertisers about the volume of use on our site. This allows advertisers to serve ads that are most
relevant to your personal interests.
- The referring URL and all DIYonline.com URLs you visit.
DIYonline.com also tracks the usage patterns of our web site. DIYonline.com
assesses and identifies the usage volume, length of time spent, paths taken through the site and
other similar research of our web site on an ongoing basis. This research allows us to determine
the areas of our site that need improvement, and allow us to better customize the content and
information you see displayed using your personal preferences. Our commitment is to deliver
meaningful, relevant content, software and services to you and the other users.
Security of your Personal Profile
DIYonline.com employs industry-standard practices for safeguarding the personal information of our
visitors. Database security and Web server 128 bit encryption (Secure Socket Layers) for
transactions in our e-commerce "BUY NOW" sections of our site are standard practices on
DIYonline.com. Our "BUY NOW" feature allows you to conveniently make online purchases from our web
site. These purchases may require credit card and personal contact information. DIYonline.com's
shopping services store your information and send it to the participating merchant automatically
when you make a purchase, using encryption technology to protect your information during this
transfer. We use secure server software (SSL), the industry standard for ensuring the security of
your electronic commerce transactions. SSL encrypts all of your personal information transmitted
over the Internet, including your credit card number, name and address. This technology is designed
to protect your information by rendering it useless, should it ever be intercepted in transit.
The personal data we store on our system is protected by firewall and password.
Our network firewall is a combination of hardware and software designed to keep unauthorized users
from accessing our network. The password you select, along with your unique email address, prevents
others from accessing your information. We suggest that you do not disclose your password to
anyone.
We strive to make your shopping experience on DIYonline.com easy, fast and
worry-free. However, please note that our participating online merchants follow separate privacy
policies, for which DIYonline.com is not responsible. Please be sure to check the privacy policies
of these merchants and other service providers before proceeding, and read the privacy information
carefully.
Your personal profile is collected by DIYonline.com and stored in a secure
operating environment that is not available to the public. We constantly monitor and update the
security of our computer equipment and software based on industry trends and our own
initiatives.
Our site's 'Bulletin Boards', 'Ask The Expert', or any other forums, as these entities are
considered public and you are responsible for your actions and personal information in these areas
of the site. The DIYonline.com Privacy Policy does not cover these public forums. DIYonline.com is
not liable for the information, suggestions and recommendations offered on our community forums.

in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary and the user therefore has a choice whether or
not to disclose this information. Information requested may include contact information (such as
name and shipping address), and demographic information (such as zip code, age level, etc.).
Contact information will be used to notify the winners and award prizes. Survey information will be
used for purposes of monitoring or improving the use and satisfaction of this site.
Supplementation of Information
In order for DIYonline.com to properly fulfill its obligation to our customers, it is necessary for
us to supplement the information we receive with information from third-party sources.
To tailor the site to an individual's preference, we combine information about
the purchasing habits of users with similar information from our partners, to create a personalized
user profile. When a user makes a purchase from our e-commerce partners, or participates in our
"Contractor Referral" services, for example, the participating companies collect and share that
purchase information or project information with us so we can tailor the site to our users'
preferences and complete the users' requests.
E-commerce
For convenience, DIYonline.com allows you to purchase the tools and materials you need to complete
your project directly from our site, based on the shopping list provided in your custom
Specification Kit. The personal information we might disclose to the participating e-commerce
partner includes but is not limited to: your name, shipping address, phone, email address, payment
information and any information you might provide for an e-commerce transaction.
Contractor Referral Service

personal information such as: name, address, phone, fax number, email, project information (project
design specifications, start date, end date, estimated budget), expert specialty being requested,
and geographic information.
Co-branding
On certain occasions, DIYonline.com will sponsor co-branded web sites with carefully chosen
partners who we expect to have no less stringent security and privacy policies than our own. You
will recognize one of our co-branded web sites because you will see our logo as well as our
partner's logo at the top of the web page. In these cases, and with your prior consent, we may
share with that partner some of the data we receive.
Sponsors
You may opt-in to receive rebates, dollars-off coupons, product specials or content, based on your
personal preferences and needs, from our sponsors, advertisers, partners and third parties. Should
you elect to receive (or opt-into) this information, DIYonline.com will share your name and email
address with the third party. We will not share the personally identifiable information provided to
us without either asking your consent, or providing you an opportunity to otherwise opt-out,
through a check box at the point of registration or on the 'My Info' section of the web site.
